Gakundu, Kenya - Round Hill Roastery
Gakundu Coffee Factory is operated by Gakunda Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Embu County, Kenya. The factory processes the coffee of its 1300 smallholder farmers members, who are encouraged to intercrop their coffee with banana, maize and macadamia trees to improve soil health and provide shade.
Alongside receiving premiums for their coffee, co-operative members can access a central fund to finance school fees, emergencies and agricultural investments.
This fully washed coffee is processed traditionally at the wet mill, undergoing pulping, fermentation and thorough washing before drying on raised beds. While that classic blackcurrant flavour is definitely there in this roast from Round Hill, there’s also some toasty shortbread and cereal notes on the finish.
Somerset has a thriving speciality coffee scene and Round Hill Roastery, based just outside Bath, are a key player. This coffee roaster focuses on single farm and single estate coffee allows them to create strong relationships direct with suppliers and bring truly unique coffee and complete transparency to their customers.
Round Hill roast their coffee specifically for either filter or espresso so they can bring out the best in their beans and their bright bags make things simple: blue for filter, pink for espresso.
