Slovenian wine producer Janko Bogatič calls himself a journeyman wine grower, having stepped up to look after his father’s vineyard at the age of just 18. He farms sustainably, and takes a natural approach to making, producing complex but fresh and modern wines like his flagship Zweigelt that prioritise drinkability.
Janko has 23 acres of vines in Ritoznoj ( Rit-ozh-noy), just 40 minutes south of the Austrian border. The name literally means place where the warm sun warms the back side (of the mountain) but locals jokingly twist this to ‘backside sweat’ to refer to the hard graft of working in the Porhoje mountain range.
The Gabernik 23 label has got less of a story, it’s the Bogatičs' home address!
