Burundian Coffee
Like its northern neighbour Rwanda, Burundi is fast becoming a large exporter of coffee, noted for its berry flavours and juicy acidity.
Burundi
Having faced many difficulties in the establishment of a coffee market as a result of political and economic unrest and environmental challenges, today efforts towards ensuring better deals for smallholder farmers and infrastructural development means a better market and higher quality coffees. Small hold farms are clustered around community washing stations and, despite coffee growing right across the mountainous landlocked nation, coffees from the northern regions of Kayanza, Ngozi, Gitega and Kirundo are preferred by many specialty roasters as the higher altitudes here generally produce fruitier, sweeter cups.
