Rwanda is known as ‘the land of a thousand hills’, and its coffee benefits from ideal coffee growing conditions including high altitude, regular rainfall and volcanic soils. Fruity and floral, the majority of Rwandan coffee is grown by around half a million smallholders in the nation.

Coffee has played a key and symbolic part in Rwanda’s recovery from genocide, with much foreign aid invested into establishing coffee partnerships, infrastructure and promoting quality. Transport continues to pose a challenge for this landlocked nation, alongside the ‘potato defect’ that uniquely affects coffees from this region. There is ongoing research and a commitment to development for this very important crop.
