We’ve got a real soft spot for Chinese coffee at drop. It was the first origin we got truly excited about when we started to buy more coffees and is still an instant hit when we see it on our roasters’ offer lists.
This year we’re marking Lunar New Year by spotlighting a selection coffees that show the great potential and unique characteristics of Chinese specialty coffee.
China’s main coffee region Yunnan has a rich tradition of tea concentrated around Pu’er but also offers the perfect environment for growing high quality arabica coffee.
Yunnan borders Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam and has been used by big name coffee corps for commercial robusta production since the 90s, but growers, many of whom are Lahu, are turning their attention to quality and hoping to build their own reputation with disease-resistant varieties of arabica.
Their coffee grows on biodiverse estates in the Yunnan mountains where it is often intercropped with tea, fruit, and nuts
Mr Tian Cai and Mr Tang operate Gui Ben Washing Station, part of Yunnan Coffee Traders in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, near the Laos border. Here, they process their own coffee as well as that of small farmers in the Guiben area.
Torch Coffee are a pioneering producer and educator. They work closely with farming communities to develop their coffee both on the farm and in their lab. At their core is the idea that they don’t want to change Chinese coffee, but want to help produce coffees that really show off the unique character of Yunnan.
Ms Wei Yunhua's Tianhao Estate in the mountains of Lancang County has been growing coffee near the city of Pu'er for two decades. She has consistently focused on producing sustainable, organic grown coffee using her own homemade fertilisers.
Xiding Washing Station is located in the village of Xiding in Menghai County near the China-Myanmar border. This lot gets its name from the ‘purple-leaf’ Caturra variety that was developed by the Dehong Tropical Research Institute in Yunnan.
A super unique Chinese coffee sourced from the mountains of Lancang in China’s Yunnan region. To achieve these results, the coffee was first traditionally washed then placed into sealed bags with butter to anaerobically ferment for 3 days.
