Gichathaini AA, Kenya - Crankhouse Coffee

Crankhouse are kicking off the Kenyan coffee season with these sweet beans that offer tasting notes of tangy kiwi, vanilla and almond. This balanced palate has a long, smooth finish that we think works perfectly with Chemex brewers.

Gichathaini Factory is one of the three washing stations of Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society in the Nyeri region of Kenya. These stations buy coffee from the 770 smallholder producers who are members of Gikanda and give them an advance payment at delivery. They then process and sell their coffee at market- offering around 85% of the sale price back to the farmer.

Processing at Gichathaini follows the standard Kenyan procedure of sorting, pulping, fermenting, washing, soaking and drying. Gichataini is intensely focused on conservation during this water intensive process, with water sourced from the nearby Ragati River re-circulated to prevent over-extraction.

We love Crankhouse’s offering of lesser-seen origins and varietals and their beautifully illustrated fully recyclable bags don’t hurt either. Check out our latest drop's here.

Exeter based Crankhouse Coffee launched in 2014, growing from a single car garage to a roastery in the heart of Exeter where quality is key. Today, they are dedicated to a sustainable future of coffee, and contribute to organisations that drive science-based change in the industry such as the Specialty Coffee Association, World Coffee Research, Alliance for Coffee Excellence and One Percent for the Planet.
