El Dorado Wush Wush, Ecuador - Harmony Coffee
These rare Wush Wush coffee beans from Harmony are surprisingly versatile- working brilliantly as both espresso and filter and bringing an exceptionally complex palate of pineapple, caramelised banana, lime and candyfloss.
Wush Wush is an Ethiopian heirloom variety that’s named for an area of south west Ethiopia that was reportedly the first place to cultivate the coffee plant. It’s still relatively rare to see Wush Wush from outside Ethiopia, but this year a number of South American farms have begun farming, jumping on its reputation for intense floral and sweet fruit flavour.
El Dorado is run by the Elder family together with Bernard Uhe, an expert in coffee agriculture. Their move from growing almonds to coffee is part of a wider trend in Ecuador, a relatively small coffee producer with a growing number of dedicated farms investing in rare varieties and careful processing.
Meticulous natural processing pairs extremely well with an expressive varietal like Wush Wush, bringing an extra layer of juicy, tropical sweetness to an already characterful cup. At El Dorado, this process involves drying on elevated, mesh-bottomed tables that let air flow all around, slows down drying and keeping the coffee clean.
After competing in (and winning) barista comps across the UK, and roasting up a storm with Kiss the Hippo, Ben Rowe’s going it alone with his own nano-roastery Harmony Coffee based in York. A real coffee man through and through, Ben has worked in almost every sector of the industry, and the coffee we’ve tried from Harmony shows this wealth of experience.
Harmony’s coffees hope to showcase incredible quality, ethically sourced specialty lots for every coffee lover’s need, from easy drinking cups to something a bit out of the ordinary.
