Don't Feed the Ponies Billy 2023 - Sandridge Barton
Billy is an ultra fresh English red wine from Sandridge Barton's estate in the Dart Valley. This field blend of Pinot Noir and Madeleine Angevine is part of the Devon winery's experimental Don't Feed the Ponies range of spontaneously fermented, un-filtered wines with no additions.
The series features wines named for Dartmor's Tors, and hopes to create pure and honest wines that let the fruit do the talking to show off the best of the South Devon terroir.
2023's blend is made up of 72% Pinot Noir Précoce, 10% Pinot Noir and 18% Madeleine Angevine, spontaneously fermented in stainless steel and then blended with 6 month barrel aged Pinot Noir that underwent carbonic maceration.
Is it a red? Is it a rosé? It's delicious. Super light in both colour and flavour, this almost-rosé is vibrant with red berry and cherry flavour and minimal tannins making it especially drinkable straight out the fridge.
Sandridge Barton's estate winery builds on the legacy of English wine pioneers Sharpham Wine, who established a vineyard in Devon's Dart Valley in 1981.
Since planting a new organic 450 acre estate near Stoke Gabriel, Sandridge Barton have built a state of the art winery that allows them to produce their wines with minimal intervention, sustainably blending modern and traditional techniques to express the unique terroir of South Devon.
Exciting natural English wine can be hard to find, so we love their new experimental Don't Feed The Ponies series; a range of low intervention wines named for the wild horses that roam in Dartmoor National Park.
