Batard Langelier Pensées Nocturnes - Domaine Batard Langelier
Cremants (traditional method French sparkling wines from outside Champagne) have really had their moment in 2026 and this one from Batard Langelier has all of the mouth-watering dryness and balanced fizz that’s made them so popular.
Pensées Nocturnes uses the Melon de Bourgogne grape that are organic grown by Jérémie Bâtard in France's Loire Valley. The are soft pressed and juice allowed to run off immediately. All fermentation takes place in underground cement tanks and the wine is aged on lees for 7 months. For this 2020 vintage, the tirage (addition of sugar and yeasts) took place in April 2021 followed by 14 months ageing in bottle. Finally, the wine was disgorged in July 2022 with no dosage.
The resulting wine is bready on the nose accompanied by a baked apple aroma. The palate features a thrillingly acidic combo of citrus, apple peel and lime amidst moussey bubbles and an ultra-clean finish.
Domaine Batard Langelier spans 20 hectares in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation just 50km from the Atlantic coast and is almost entirely planted with Melon de Bourgogne- the grape used in making Muscadet.
Domaine Batard Langelier spans 20 hectares in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation just 50km from the Atlantic coast and is almost entirely planted with Melon de Bourgogne- the grape used in making Muscadet. The ethos of the family estate has been driven by third-generation winemaker Jérémie and his father Pascal. In the 1990s, Pascal rebelled against market-driven standardisation and its threats to biodiversity in favour of terroir-driven viniculture and sustainable viticulture. Jérémie continued this mission when he took over in 2009 and has brought in a new era of certified organic agriculture that makes for incredibly expressive wines. The Domaine's single-vineyard cuvées show off the oceanic influence and highly varied soils of the estate, as well as the great potential of Melon de Bourgogne; a grape that’s become emblematic of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine.
