Turnalls Avall Pinot Noir - Mas de La Sabatera
Just as we were starting to think we’d not had a good Pinot Noir in a while, Mas de La Sabatera have pulled this one out of their back pocket. Pinot Noir absolutely thrives on the slopes near Montblanc in Conca de Barberà and Mas de la Sabatera have treated it right too. This Spanish red wine has undergone semi-carbonic maceration and whole bunch fermentation with indigenous yeast and was bottled unfiltered without added sulfites.
Despite this, there’s no natural ‘farminess’ going on, it’s pure and delicate with lots of juicy red fruit flavour, a hint of spice and a little tannic quality from the stems.
"If you like wine so much why don't we start making it ourselves?" Those words from Edu Pallarés's father Xavi inspired them to set up Mas de la Sabatera with a vision to 'rescue' plots around Montblanc in which they saw great potential, and nurture the health of the soil.
Mas de la Sabatera is based in a formerly abandoned farmhouse, Mas d'en Sabater, where day labourers and farm hands had lived for centuries. Now, the farmhouse is used to make zero-zero wines using characterful grapes like Trepat, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the heart of Conca de Barberà.
