Matongo, Burundi - Spaceboy Coffee

When Spaceboy recommends a coffee, you just get it. These coffee beans from Burundi come from the Matongo Washing Station in Kayanza province.  Around 2000 farmers contribute to the station, with each grower farming less than 50 trees.

What makes this one special is the Kenyan-style double fermentation washed process that Matongo follow. The first fermentation takes place under water for up to 12 hours before the coffee is moved to a separate tank for a secondary fermentation before washing to remove the mucilage. Drying takes place on African raised beds where the coffee is arranged into small mounds to extend the drying process and intensify the flavour in the final cup. You can expect that juicy blackcurrant Kenyan body but also some real citrus clarity reminiscent of an Ethiopian coffee- the best of both worlds at exceptional value.

All businesses are projects, but Spaceboy has been a PROJECT for founder and award winning roaster Finn Mclean. The roasting machine at Edinburgh based Spaceboy has been crowdfunded and carefully hand-built over the last two years, completely custom designed to give the team an unmatched level of roasting flexibility.

Finn's experimental approach is reflected in his coffees, fun, funky and a bit wild - all things we can get behind. After sourcing the best quality green beans, the perfect roast-profile is tested to achieve the best representation of the coffee’s profile, which can be replicated with incredible accuracy. With no desire to open a coffee shop of their own, all the focus for Spaceboy is on roasting up the good stuff, supplying cafés and people like us with expertly roasted coffee beans.
