Yoloxochitlán, Mexico - Red Bank
The remote Sierra Mazateca region of Oaxaca is hiding some incredible coffee, but thankfully Lake District coffee roaster Red Bank have been sourcing coffee from here season after season.
This season’s offering from farmers in San Mateo Yoloxochitlán is sweet and well rounded with notes of hazelnut, honeycomb and orange blossom making it a brilliant single origin Mexican coffee for espresso drinkers.
The scale of coffee production in Oaxaca is tiny, and the coffee farms in the Sierra Mazateca are even smaller. The size of these lots makes quality control extremely challenging and getting high quality coffee ready for export almost impossible; each lot must be screened separately before being compiled into a community lot. It’s Red Bank’s sourcing partner Red Beetle who navigate the challenging logistics of Oaxacan coffee, ensuring that washed process parchment coffee makes it to the dry-mill stage on time so that the Mazatec farmers can access the prices of the specialty coffee market. It’s a coffee miracle.
Red Bank are a Lake District based coffee roastery who began their journey in 2015. From their unit in Kendal, Red Bank are guided by quality, traceability and sustainability, continually investing in their business to always push these principles.
Founder Tom became a certified Q-grader in 2019, they’ve got themselves a top of the range low-energy roaster, and moved to 100% LDPE coffee bags that are fully recyclable all in an effort to make a difference at every step of the supply chain.
Their coffee offering is pretty special too: with considerate sourcing and traceability as the absolute priority, and an equal focus on both expertly balanced blends and all the exciting new anaerobics that are sweeping the specialty coffee scene.
