Gasharu, Rwanda - Outpost Coffee
A seriously sweet Rwandan specialty coffee from Gasharu washing station. While washed process coffee is more common in Rwanda, Gasharu are one of several stations pushing for diversity in processing in the name of quality and reputation, producing exciting natural lots like this one.
Gasharu was founded in 1976 by Celestin Rumenerangabo whose son Valentin Kamenyi takes great pride in continuing his work. Valentin’s childhood in the 1990s was marked by the Tutsi genocide, which had a big impact on the way he views coffee. Today, Rwanda exports almost 50% less coffee than 30 years ago, but operates a quality over quantity model that prioritises value for smallholder farmers like the ones who contribute to Gasharu.
Roasted by Outpost in Nottingham, these coffee beans have a syrupy sweet brown sugar body, with stand out tasting notes of banana and toffee apple providing complexity in a versatile cup.
