Ana Nolasco, Guatemala - Cartwheel Coffee
San Marcos Huista is a very rural community in the Guatemalan coffee region of Huehuetenango. As in much of Guatemala, it’s women like Ana Nolasco Pascual who dominate the coffee industry here, with many men leaving their wives and daughters to migrate to the US to seek a better income. These women are supported by local co-operatives like Cooperativa El Sendero who provide technical and logistical assistance and have the ability to reach specialty coffee exporters including Primavera.
Ana grows coffee alongside her husband and children and also oversees processing at their on-site wet-mill where they follow a traditional washed technique. The cherry is pulped on the day of harvest and undergoes dry fermentation before thorough washing and drying.
These beautifully balanced coffee beans have been roasted by Cartwheel in Nottingham to be super versatile. Mixed berry flavour is noticeable in black filter and espresso drinks, while the fudgy body and rhubarb acidity work well for a complex milk based coffee.
Cartwheel is a Nottingham based independent specialty coffee roastery and café who are bringing transparent conversations about the journey of their coffee to their customers.
Having grown up working in his Mum’s café, founder Alex threw himself on a whirlwind coffee journey all over the UK, becoming passionate about sharing coffee as more than a commodity product. Cartwheel’s coffee prioritises bold and unique flavours, honouring the characteristics of their origins and those involved in the coffee supply chain through sustainable sourcing.
