Baristocracy, Papua New Guinea - Baristocracy Coffee

A fully washed coffee from Papua New Guinea, sourced from smallholder farmers in the Western Highlands. Around ⅔ of Papua New Guinea’s population make their living from coffee, with most grown casually around people’s homes in ‘garden farms’ and sold to local co-operatives for processing.

This coffee, roasted in Newcastle by Baristocracy, comes from the Wahgi Valley where coffee is the major crop, with the industry centred around the town of Mount Hagen. Here, the land is so fertile that it takes very little farmer effort to grow coffee but the infrastructure still proves transporting the coffee cherry farm the farm to the mills in Goroka a challenge.

The final cup is sweet and complex, with subtle almond flavour and mellow pineapple acidity that suits both espresso and filter brewing and is a great way to try out this rarer coffee origin.

Baristocracy is a family business bringing Australian speciality coffee expertise to the North East.

Australian born Alex was raised in the industry and, together with his Geordie partner Kate, has turned his background in roasting, blending and barista training into one of the North East’s favourite coffee roasters. Baristocracy roast and supply to numerous coffee shops around the region (including our LOCAL's coffee shelf) as well as producing beautifully complex bags for the aspiring home brewer.
