Jonathan Ngoga, Rwanda - Assembly Coffee

We’ve had some incredible coffees from Rwanda, but these smallholder grown lots are normally mixed at local washing stations.

What makes these new coffee beans so exciting is that they are single-producer lots which shine a light on some outstanding growers. Assembly have worked closely with exporter Raw Material and Muraho Trading Company to create three high-quality lots to be processed as single-producer coffees from the Nyamasheke district near Lake Kivu.

This lot was grown by Jonathan Ngoga, whose lots are normally mixed before processing at the Rugali Washing Station which is operated by Muraho. In initiating this project Assembly committed to a guaranteed purchase that offered security and extra value for the Rwandan farmers they worked with, and their purchase price of $0.87 per kilo was $0.30 more than the price that would’ve been set without the project.

Jonathan’s washed lot is sweet and complex, with mouth-watering tasting notes of honeycomb and juicy lemon that are ideal for pour over brewing.

Assembly Coffee’s origin story is a really interesting one. The roastery came about when a small team from Volcano Coffee Works, a well-regarded and established specialty coffee roastery based in South London sought to define how a roastery could best serve its purpose within the specialty coffee supply chain.

Assembly's vision became clear in 2015, founding a dynamic new roastery in Brixton that sourced only the highest quality specialty coffees and could adapt with the industry, prioritising customer needs by adopting a data-driven approach to coffee buying.

While we don’t roast our own coffee, we're a business that sources coffee with our customers at the forefront so this strategy really resonates with us!
