Tumaini Co-op, DRC - Assembly Coffee
Assembly sure know how to do Autumn. This natural process coffee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo is brimming with marmalade sweetness and a smooth rounded finish; like if a pile of autumn leaves tasted the way it looks.
Tumaini, which means hope in Swahili, is a coffee co-operative based in South Kivu, founded in 2016 to support the wives and widows of local coffee farmers who have been killed or unlawfully imprisoned. The women receive support and resources to help reward and further develop women’s contribution to the supply chain and with Tumaini's help their coffee is now certified organic.
Assembly Coffee’s origin story is a really interesting one. The roastery came about when a small team from Volcano Coffee Works, a well-regarded and established specialty coffee roastery based in South London sought to define how a roastery could best serve its purpose within the specialty coffee supply chain.
Assembly's vision became clear in 2015, founding a dynamic new roastery in Brixton that sourced only the highest quality specialty coffees and could adapt with the industry, prioritising customer needs by adopting a data-driven approach to coffee buying.
While we don’t roast our own coffee, we're a business that sources coffee with our customers at the forefront so this strategy really resonates with us!
