Giku, Burundi - Scenery
The Long Miles Coffee Project have been making it easier for roasters to access great coffee from Burundi since their founding in 2013. They work directly with farming families under a farmer-driven coffee production model built around hill-level traceability that means roasters can build relationships and return to lots year on year.
Scenery are the perfect example of this, marking their fourth harvest from smallholders on Gikungere hill. This traditional natural lot was processed at Ninga washing station, Long Miles’ newest station that has transformed the journeys of farmers from Gikungere, who transport their cherry on foot or by bike.
We can completely understand why Scenery are so excited about this one. Lots of classic Burundian stewed fruit flavour, roasted light and bright to bring out aromatic black tea and citrus tasting notes.
Scenery was founded by a trio of coffee professionals with a combined three decades of industry experience behind their new coffee shop and roastery.
We’ve been constantly recommended Scenery by customers, colleagues and friends and it’s not because they’re doing all the flashy things or making big claims. Instead, Scenery have a straightforward and honest approach to coffee that they want to share with as many people as possible.
They buy and roast incredible quality coffee with a particular interest on sourcing coffees that offer higher impact to producers as well as on progressive post-harvest processing.
Scenery admit that getting the balance between cost, quality, and ethics right is just about impossible, but they try their absolute best and release accountability reports to give consumers a transparent look behind the scenes.
One of the things we’re loving about Scenery is their unique approach to roast labelling. Rather than indicate roast by colour, their bags show how much roaster ‘influence’ you can taste on each coffee ie. how much they’ve pushed a coffee in a certain direction to encourage specific flavours.
