Thunguri, Kenya - Hundred House Coffee

It’s the combo of fertile soils, seasonal rainfall and extremely high altitude that produces characteristic Kenyan coffees with a full body, ripe fruit flavour and high acidity.

All those hallmark flavours are making themselves known in this bag of coffee beans from Hundred House, with a deep blackcurrant body, orange marmalade sweetness and lemon acidity making for an extremely balanced and quintessentially Kenyan cup.

This lot comes from the Thunguri Wetmill (or factory) which works with over 1100 smallholder farmers as part of Kibirigwi Farmers’ Cooperative Society. The mill sits near the border of Nyeri County and Kirinyaga County, on the South Western slopes of Mount Kenya and receives coffee from nearby farmers who pick their coffee and deliver it to the factory on the same day. The coffee undergoes a traditional Kenyan washed process; sorted, pulped, fermented then washed and soaked for 24 hours before being moved to dry on raised beds.

Hundred House Coffee have been roasting in the Shropshire hills since 2017. From their small rural home near the Welsh border, they’ve opened a dialogue with rural farming communities all over the world to source the best coffee as ethically as possible.

Co-founders Matthew Wade and Anabelle De Gersigny focus on careful small batch roasting backed by decades of coffee experience. The team at Hundred House’s passion for culture means their coffee also supports the creative community through outreach and collaboration.
