Hambela, Ethiopia - Heartland Coffee
Heartland have sourced this deliciously sweet and fruity Ethiopian coffee from Hambela. This region in the Guji Zone is made up of densely wooded lots at around 2,000 MASL that must be harvested by hand, meaning the knowledge and experience of local farmers here must be protected.
METAD is an Ethiopian coffee trading and export business with a long family history of coffee farming and buying. Their aim is to make up for the potential shortcomings of the coffee industry in Ethiopia by promoting exceptional coffees with a focus on traceability, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. The company provides training courses, builds infrastructure, distributes seeds and pays farmers advances to ensure stability throughout the chain.
The majority of METAD’s work takes place at their 200 hectare farm and processing centre in Hambela, where they operate a washing station, drying beds, drying mill, and housing for seasonal staff.
This washed coffee has mouthwatering honeyed nectarine and date sweetness and plenty of raspberry brightness that makes it a standout filter brew.
Antipodean duo Mal and Tara moved to London in 2000 and began roasting coffee in their flat as a passion project.
After opening their commercial roastery, Heartland began supplying to restaurants and coffee shops across the city, but they had their sights set on something London couldn’t provide. In 2012, the couple relocated their family and business to Llandudno, gaining space, fresh air and joining the blossoming independent coffee scene in North Wales.
Heartland’s mission is the same as ever; offer coffee according to seasonality so that they can share the fullest expression of coffee with their customers.
