For the latest issue of their quarterly magazine and coffee roasting project, Exemplar are shining a spotlight on blends. The aim is to create a flavour profile that gives space for each component in the cup, making a coffee that’s greater than the sum of its parts.

While they’ve formed one edition that is more what we associate with coffee blends - a dependable, low acidity, balanced cup; we’ve gone for the thought-provoking Chronicle Blend that promises something different and defies expectations.

The Chronicle is a vibrantly fruity, tropical coffee that, for this season, pairs a washed Guatemalan coffee from Maria Gaspar with a natural coffee from Brazil grown by Douglas Luiz. Though only 20% of the final blend, the syrupy sweet fruit flavour of the Brazilian portion really shines through as both a standalone espresso and a long black, with some citric acidity and a tealike finish.
