Honeybee, Rwanda - Coborn Coffee
There’s a bit of a triple meaning at play behind Coborn’s new Rwandan coffee, Honeybee. This seriously sweet coffee has not only been part honey processed, but we might also have the native honeybees of the Nyungwe forest to thank for its unique flavour profile.
The biodiverse area of Nyungwe has a big history of honey collection, with beekeeping providing extra income to local communities. The bees assist with pollination, reducing the need for fertilisers, and also ensure that farmers are prevented from using pesticides meaning coffee in this area is organic.
This coffee has been sourced from the women-owned farms who form the Gwiza group within Abadatezuka Cooperative. These women grow coffee at elevations all the way up to 2200 MASL and deliver their coffee to the Cyato Washing Station.
London based micro-roastery Coborn Coffee have a loyal following of supporters who have the same respect for both their high quality coffee and responsible sourcing and roasting. Justin and Kenny founded Coborn with the aim of making unique and great tasting coffees affordable to their local communities. In the two years since their inception, they’ve managed all of this while sourcing only from female majority owned farms and co-ops in developing economies.
We got chatting to these guys at London Coffee Festival and couldn’t get enough of their fun-filled brews or ambitious ideas for the coffee industry so we’re thrilled to have them on drop.
