Ninga Washing Station, Burundi - Cartwheel Coffee

After opening another washing station in Burundi, the founders of the Long Miles Coffee Project saw the journeys that farmers on Ninga hill were making to deliver their cherry, sometimes walking three hours on difficult terrain with heavy sacks or carts. They decided that building a station on Ninga was simply a necessity and following many years of planning Ninga produced its first micro-lots in 2020, now serving serves 764 local farmers who grow coffee between 1800 and 2000MASL.

Washing stations like Ninga are more than just facilities for processing, they offer communal spaces, jobs, clean water and are often a marker for broader development in the area.

Its been a while since we've had a coffee from Burundi, so we were thrilled to see this one from Cartwheel Coffee Roasters pop up. This lot was harvested in the summer of 2024, and was processed using a traditional washed technique and dried on raised beds. Clean and aromatic, these coffee beans feature a beautifully light flavour with a subtle sweet candyfloss finish. We recommend trying this one with pourover methods like V60 or Kalita.
