Kii AA, Kenya - Carter Coffee

Kenyan coffee arrivals are a sure sign that spring is on the way. This one from Carter is certainly bringing that springtime feeling to the cup, with bright and beautiful flavours of raspberry, melon and lychee layered amongst butterscotch sweetness.

Kii Washing Station in Kiringaya County is one of three factories that make up Rung’eto Farmers Cooperative Society. They have an outstanding reputation for producing the very best Kenyan fully washed coffees, processing the coffee of over 800 local smallholder farmers. Upon arrival, the coffee cherries are pulped and graded by density, then fermented, washed and cleaned once more to remove all mucilage. This process ensures a coffee with plenty of clarity and that classic bright acidity we know and love in Kenyan coffees.

Kenya’s coffee grading system refers to bean size, where AA is top of the pile and typically attracts a higher price tag for its larger size (but doesn’t guarantee better flavour!)

Carter might be Edinburgh’s new kids on the block but founders Danny and Sorley bring with them a wealth of roasting and brewing experience honed from Australia to Scotland.

A philosophy of craftsmanship, connection, technical expertise and relationships underpins their idea that the best coffee is better shared. Their offer list is picked with flavour first, opting for established farmers who value quality and innovation.

For now, they’ve been popping up all over the UK, building their community by getting their beans brewing on coffee bars up and down the country. They've quickly made a big name for themselves, but they’ve got even bigger plans for 2026.
