Loro 2023 - La Voluta
A bright and energetic red wine from Anna Rubio and Jean-Benoît Vivequain's label La Voluta. Their 6.5 hectares of indigenous grapes in the French commune of Cucugnan are organically farmed and processed as manually as possible with patience and simplicity underpinning the project.
For Loro they've blended two grapes that thrive in the hot and windy climes of the Hautes Corbières, combining partially crushed whole bunch Syrah with direct pressed Grenache Noir juice. The wine is fermented with wild yeasts, unfiltered, and made without the use of added sulphites leaving a bottle that is full of authentic character and bursting with red and black cherry, strawberry and black pepper.
Anna and Jean Benoît met and started making wine in New Zealand. The pair have now settled in the Roussillon where they have set up La Voluta, a 6.5 hectare vineyard in the rugged hills outside the village of Cucugnan.
La Voluta's focus is on indigenous varieties which grow well in the arid, Mediterranean climate. Their old vine Grenache and Syrah produce low yields but very concentrated wines like Loro that are punchy and herbaceous and really show off the Pyrenean terroir. All farming is uncertified organic, with the mountain winds offering a natural pesticide, and their viniculture uses sulphur only when very necessary.
