Megadu Carbonic Macerated, Ethiopia - Scenery
Ethiopian coffee season hasn’t truly started til we get our hands on some of Bette Buna’s Megadu lots. Hester and Dawit founded their dynamic and impact driven Ethiopian coffee company Bette Buna 6 years ago. Founders Hester and Dawit are really seeing the rewards of their work in the Guji Zone over the last couple of years, and we’ve seen lots of their signature naturals hitting our fave roasters’ offer lists.
Scenery have opted for this standout carbonic macerated natural that adds a little boozy liqueur and aromatic spice to the classic fruity profile. Full bodied, complex and absolutely packed with notes of cherry liqueur, syrupy blueberry, tinned tropical fruits and lavender honey.
Ripe cherries were placed into airtight barrels, and carbon dioxide flushed in to create an anoxic environment. After 96-hours of carbonic maceration, the cherries are drained and dried on raised beds with shade control. Before they can be taken to the Bette Buna mill in the Guji highlands.
Scenery was founded by a trio of coffee professionals with a combined three decades of industry experience behind their new coffee shop and roastery.
We’ve been constantly recommended Scenery by customers, colleagues and friends and it’s not because they’re doing all the flashy things or making big claims. Instead, Scenery have a straightforward and honest approach to coffee that they want to share with as many people as possible.
They buy and roast incredible quality coffee with a particular interest on sourcing coffees that offer higher impact to producers as well as on progressive post-harvest processing.
Scenery admit that getting the balance between cost, quality, and ethics right is just about impossible, but they try their absolute best and release accountability reports to give consumers a transparent look behind the scenes.
One of the things we’re loving about Scenery is their unique approach to roast labelling. Rather than indicate roast by colour, their bags show how much roaster ‘influence’ you can taste on each coffee ie. how much they’ve pushed a coffee in a certain direction to encourage specific flavours.
