Chiroso, Colombia - Odd Kin Coffee Roasters

These Colombian coffee beans roasted in Bristol by Odd Kin are all about the variety! Chiroso, or Caturra Chiroso, is an exciting arabica variety with an origin story that’s full of twists and turns, myth and mystery.

Prized for its sweet and complex flavour profile, Chiroso got its name from a Colombian biscuit called Achira due to the similar elongated shape of the beans. Though Chiroso is grown widely in Colombia’s Antioquia region, its origins may be much further afield. Once thought to be a mutation of the Bourbon-hybrid Caturra, research now suggests it has closer genetic links to Ethiopian landrace (or heirloom) varieties that grow wild.

The cup quality and high yields of Chiroso plants have won it a cup of excellence and encouraged many producers to plant single-variety lots as its reputation continues to grow. With this washed lot, it’s not hard to see why. Super juicy layers of zesty blackcurrant, apple and lime flavour meet jasmine florals on the nose and a long toffee finish. We love to brew a complex profile like this with a Chemex.

After opening a coffee shop and with the brief interruption of the pandemic, they decided to begin roasting their own coffee beans and Odd Kin was born. The team at Odd Kin source their coffees seasonally from green importers and only ever buy speciality coffees graded above 83 points, so you know you’ll always be getting the best coffee of the moment from these top tier roasters.
