Rene Melgar, Honduras - 17 Grams

A major fruit bomb from 17 Grams’ Brighton roastery! These vibrant coffee beans from Honduras feature tasting notes of peach, kiwi and apricot with a lingering floral finish, all contributing to a coffee that’s great for filter brewing.

Rene Melgar is a coffee grower from Cabañas in the Honduran region of La Paz. Rene is new to the specialty world, but certainly not to coffee. His grandfather was one of the biggest producers in this area of central Honduras and passed down knowledge to Rene’s father, who in turn taught his two sons the value of working in coffee. When large mill and exporter San Vicente told Rene that his coffee had specialty quality potential and could receive the associated prices, he quickly set about selecting and farming for his first specialty microlot.

This natural processed lot is made up of IH90- a hybrid varietal developed by Honduras’s coffee institute to produce outstanding cup quality and disease resistance.

In 2022, they decided to build all that experience into roasting, nabbing a modded-up refurbished roaster from our friends at Crankhouse to set up at a new roastery location.

Since then they’ve been roasting up a storm, focusing on vibrant coffees and perfecting their espresso, filter and omni roast profiles.
