Vibrazioni Catarratto - Cantine Amato
This medium bodied Italian white wine that brings a whole load of refreshing flavour to the table (even better if that table features a cheeseboard or a seafood pasta). Sicilian winemaker Cantine Amato focuses on the island’s native grape varieties, sourcing organic fruit from in and around Messina. This Catarratto comes from the Valle dello Jato and shows exactly why Sicilian makers are focusing on ancestral varieties. Cantine Amato, managed by the third generation of Amato family winemakers, carefully selected these grapes for mechanical harvest. Fermentation took place at low temperatures for up to 10 days, with closed tanks used to preserve the very aromatic quality of the Catarratto. This vegan white wine then underwent 3 months age in stainless steel tanks before being stabilised and filtered without additional sulphur and a required 3 months of bottle aging before export.
The nose is intense with peach, white melon grapefruit and tropical fruits and the fresh palate offers the same depth of flavour with a pleasant saline finish.
When Sicilia IGT was promoted to Sicilia DOC, one of the main aims was to improve the quality of wines made with native Sicilian grapes instead of promoting international varieties. Cantine Amato, in the province of Messina, is certainly living up to these aims by making an outstanding range of Sicilian wine, sourcing grapes like Nero d’Avola and Catarratto from the Jato Valley, Patti and Grotte.
Rosario Amato founded Cantine Amato in 1958 and the winery has become a multi generational effort. His son Salvatore took over in the 1980s and his oenologist son Rosario is now carrying on the tradition with his own innovations.
