about
Kenya Gakundu - Hundred House Coffee
Hundred House's delicious washed Kenyan AA coffee comes from Gakundu factory in Embu County. Here in the South Eastern foothills of Mount Kenya, farmers intercrop their coffee with banana and maize, further enriching the volcanic soils and providing extra shade at these high altitudes.
Coffee cherries from approximately 1250 local smallholders are brought to Gakundu, hand sorted and graded according to size before processing. The cherries are depulped, and the coffee is fermented for 24-36 hours in the shade. After fermentation, the coffee is washed and graded again by density before drying for up to 20 days.
Kenya has a specific focus on wet-processed coffees, building a reputation for incredibly high quality and consistency across the country. These coffee beans are in keeping with that reputation, with complex blackberry notes, grapefruit acidity encapsulated by a buttery body. We love a hand-brewed Kenyan coffee to bring out those unique flavours, so we’re excited to get this one brewed up on V60.
Hundred House Coffee have been roasting in the Shropshire hills since 2017. From their small rural home near the Welsh border, they’ve opened a dialogue with rural farming communities all over the world to source the best coffee as ethically as possible. Co-founders Matthew Wade and Anabelle De Gersigny focus on careful small batch roasting backed by decades of coffee experience. The team at Hundred House’s passion for culture means their coffee also supports the creative community through outreach and collaboration.
