Efrain Castillo, Guatemala - Hundred House Coffee
Another brilliant single-origin coffee from Huehuetenango in Guatemala that we’ve been lucky enough to try, this time from Hundred House in Shropshire. This Guatemalan growing region has been favoured by many of our UK roasters in recent years for the complex and full bodied specialty coffee it produces. Farmer Efrain Castillo has worked to expand the capabilities of his farm, including introducing the Bourbon varietal used here. Castillo and his team also process the coffee beans on site using a traditional washed process that involves 24 hours of fermentation before washing and drying in direct sun.
The result of this process is an ultra smooth chocolatey coffee, with notes of hazelnuts and red apple rounding out a delicious cup.
Co-founders Matthew Wade and Anabelle De Gersigny focus on careful small batch roasting backed by decades of coffee experience. The team at Hundred House’s passion for culture means their coffee also supports the creative community through outreach and collaboration.
