Carlos Alberto Portillo Flores- Don Pancho, Honduras - Crankhouse Coffee
A standout new Honduran coffee from Exeter roasters Crankhouse, super fruity and sweet with citrus notes at the forefront and a honeyed mouthfeel.
These washed coffee beans come from a third generation coffee farmer Carlos Alberto Portillo Flores’s Paraneima micro lot - an award-winning hybrid cultivar developed for disease resistance in the face of climate change. The lot is based on Carlos’s farm 'Don Pancho' in Honduras’s Santa Barbara department, close to the Guatemalan border.
Coffee farming’s a tough biz, Carlos has sadly had to migrate to the US in order to support his family and farm at home. Coffees like this one show the potential of small farmers in the specialty coffee industry, but his story shows how difficult it is for growers to make money from their incredible products.
Exeter based Crankhouse Coffee launched in 2014, growing from a single car garage to a roastery in the heart of Exeter where quality is key. Today, they are dedicated to a sustainable future of coffee, and contribute to organisations that drive science-based change in the industry such as the Specialty Coffee Association, World Coffee Research, Alliance for Coffee Excellence and One Percent for the Planet.
