Black Sands Chardonnay 2022 - Patrick Sullivan
Patrick Sullivan has got a real focus on creating expressive and complex Australian Chardonnay wine.
This organic white wine comes from a single volcanic soil vineyard, Black Sands. Whole bunches were hand harvested and pressed into barrels to ferment with indigenous yeasts. A little sulphur was added upon bottling but there's no fining or filtration involved here.
The resulting wine is well rounded with a medium-full body, but big on fresh citrus flavour with and some oak complexity- the perfect match for an indulgent cheeseboard.
Patrick Sullivan is a thoughtful and reflective Australian natural wine maker from Baw Baw Shire in Gippsland, Victoria. While his viniculture process is minimal intervention, he calls his viticulture 'maximum intervention'- spending everyday tending to his vineyards.
The land itself is full of rivers and creeks and covers basalt, sandstone, and volcanic soils- all of which Patrick hopes to express in his wine.
While we've been fans of Patrick's collaborative Jumping Juice label since the off, his own label is slightly more precise and complex, though still lighthearted and modern. His current focus is on high quality cool climate Chardonnay like Black Sands, that really speaks to the unique terroirs of the vineyards he works.
