El Montañista, Criollas Tintas 2021 - El Montañista (Pancho Bugallo)

It's Argentinian red wine, but not as you know it!

Juicy and light, this bottle from Argentina's Calingasta Valley really took us by surprise. The husband and wife duo Pancho and Nuria Bugallo behind El Montañista wines are challenging perceptions with their expressive wines that show off both the unique continental climate and reserve of heritage Criolla grapes, some of which are over 80 years old.

The couple farm organically, with roaming sheep acting as a natural fertiliser while also keeping the undergrowth maintained. Hand harvested grapes are sorted, with 30% kept whole bunch, and placed in concrete tanks with wild yeasts for a 12 day fermentation. The wine is them drained off and and matured in concrete eggs for 10 eggs before being bottled without filtration.

The field blend for this 2021 vintage features traditional Criolla Grande, Criolla Chica, Cereza and Canela for a bright raspberry red glass that offers major berry flavour and a mineral finish that can benefit from light chilling.

Husband and wife duo Pancho and Nuria Bugallo not only make the most of the unique climate of Argentina’s Calingasta Valley by being passionate hikers but also by creating traditional wines using heritage varietals- that is when they're not climbing the mountains of San Juan of course.

Their winemaking pays its dues to the strong history of winemaking in Calingasta, using old vine Criolla, Moscatel and Cereza varieties some of which are over 80 years old. This makes for expressive wines that are unlike most Argentinian wines we’ve tried.

Their viticulture is organic, as is traditional, and the extremely dry climate and remote location means that pests, disease and unwanted weeds don’t provide too much trouble. Winemaking takes place in a small winery next door to the couple’s home where they ferment hand harvested grapes with natural yeasts in concrete tanks.
