Cal Tiques
Catlunya, Spain
Joan Rubió's family, like many in the Catlunyan region of Penedès, stopped making wine and were forced into selling their grapes to a monopoly of Cava estates. Rubió's desire to make wine in his own way saw him head up Cava house Recaredo before stepping away in 2015 to revive his own family's tradition and starting Cal Tiques with his wife Angels.
All of Tiques's grapes are farmed organically and biodynamically across 10 hectares, creating a living agriculture that balances flora and fauna. The focus is on Xarel-Lo with some parcels of Macabeu and Tempranillo, all left unpressed, macerated on skins, and fermented in carefully selected vessels for lively wines like the fresh and fun orange Mam with expressive minerality.
